    Lonesome George was the beloved mascot of the Galapagos Islands and was presumed to be the last of the Chelonoidis Abingdoni (Pinta Island) subspecies of tortoise upon his passing in June of this year. It is now believed that his particular subspecies may have a chance at resurrection.

    Lonesome George, the last of the La Pinta species of Galapagos Tortoise,  and the face of Galapagos conservation, has passed away. His age was estimated to be over 100 years old, and his image is the logo for the Galapagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Research Station.
