Galapagos Giant Tortoise

Weighing up to 550 pounds the Galapagos giant tortoise is the largest living tortoise species.  They have a predominantly plant diet but their shell varies from island to island. They can live to over 100 years old, however they have to watch out being hunted by whalers or having rats, cats, and dogs attack the eggs and young tortoise.  There are close to 20,000 tortoises on the islands but the babies are kept inside national parks until they are old enough to be on their own.
