Nandi the elephant just celebrated her first birthday party at Reid Park Zoo. The baby calf was born at 10:55pm on August 20, 2014 weighing in at 245 pounds. She was closely monitored by the Reid Park Zoo team until no longer necessary. Just a month later she weighed in at 345 pounds. Nandi means “sweet” or “fun” in the Zulu language, which perfectly describes this lovable calf. Nandi’s mother was rescued from Swaziland, so they wanted to keep the origin or the siSwati language. Nandi is healthy, active, and adorable and can typically be seen from 9am to 1:30pm. Guests at Nandi’s first birthday party sang to her and signed cards while she opened her gifts and played with the wrapping paper.
