Visit its more contemporary landmarks from WWII and enjoy either a day of leisure to explore the city on your own or take an optional tour to Bamberg, a city favored by some of the greatest minds in history, including Goethe, Nietzsche, and Schiller. On this morning’s walking tour, stroll through the cobblestone streets and narrow alleys before emerging to find the perfect view of the hilltop Oberhaus Fortress. Here you’ll explore a 900-year-old Benedictine abbey overlooking the town on a rocky outcrop, boasting the finest Italian architecture, elaborate gold leaf walls, a 640- foot Imperial Corridor, and fabulous French ceilings. Later, sail to Durnstein through the great Wachau Valley, home to the 12th Century castle where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned after returning from the Crusades.
